... READ the 'read this first' shit before asking things. ...

What to contribute?  That has two overall answers, one is, it's suggested about that in those 'read this first' stuff, the other is just look around and see what is already being shared recently and share more of that same kind of thing.

How do I share what  do I share?  Want

You quoted me to ask a question that the answer to is contained in the quote you quoted. Look in my signature at the READ THIS FIRST link, it takes a while to plow through all of that but learning it that way will get you going a lot better than wandering around asking questions that are already answered in it.

(Quote trimmed for courtesy)

I normally just keep my head down during these kind of spats but the above line really does read true.   I joined 6 months ago looking for a viewer and tinkered a bit but couldn't access anything useful so I wandered off... I dropped in yesterday just by chance and it seems I am a leecher now.  I have a private message but cannot access private messages, I assume it is my warning that I'm a leecher.  I still can't find anything to get me rolling since I'm a leecher and I still don't have much to share or much to talk about for the same reason.  Perhaps calling restricted people "New Members"or "entry level" and giving them at least a minimum to get started with would make people feel a little less attacked. I simply don't have much reason to stay and hang around and post and contribute.  That is not intended to be an attack or anything, just how it is.  [/color]

It boils down to what kind of community you wish to build... one that mentors, grows and prospers or one that builds walls and runs a lot of people off.

Moving from "Leecher" to "Proud member" is ridiculously easy. Twenty posts I think, maybe a couple more, which don't all have to be shares, just not empty fluff or a bunch of 'thank you'. At that level you get access to private messages, and I'm not sure what the differences are in accessing areas of the board, but it loses that name that bugs a few people so much... which is one of the reasons I think the entry level access is called that, it's supposed to itch and you scratch that itch by being active enough to get out of that level. Darkstorm can't see Bento but there is quite a lot of content in the world that has nothing to do with Bento, and for that matter if you keep up with reading the discussions more or less regularly you'd have seen that Darkstorm in combination with Gina's tools can still copy Bento things properly even though it can't see them.

When people are quiet until they have made it through reading the 'read this first', and along the way have gotten a feel for how to be active without getting grumped at by the older members, they don't get ran off. It's the ones that don't do that... the ones that jump in and start requesting things, or asking questions that have been answered dozens or hundreds of times, or taking sides in arguments before they've really been here long enough to have some weight behind their opinions, things like that are what get the grouchy reactions, and just like any online community a lot of it also has to do with just who happens to be hanging around that day and what mood they're in. If someone gets ran off because they don't 'get' the things I've said in this post, and similar things that I don't want to sit and think that hard to enumerate, they probably wouldn't have liked it here anyway. I don't think there are really walls at all, but I do agree it's easier to sneak in quietly than to make a lot of noise and get things thrown at you. But if you want to use the example as a wall, and this is just my own take, but if it's a wall, so be it, personally I'd be all for that and the people that stay are the ones that are okay with the wall and are just contrary enough to climb it and stay here anyway after they make it over it.

g'day

have to say was a fun /popcorn thread to read through, can understand both sides of the line... but im well and truly a leecher at heart and couldnt give a toss if ppl call me that, only reason i signed up was cos the missus wanted the viewer, and i do it just incase something has a virus, dosnt matter if my piece of shit potato catches something else and better mine than hers getting infected. If she decides she needs the vip viewer to continue doing whatever the fuck it is she does with it, ill just fork over the $20 or whatever it is , im way too fucken stupid and way too fucken lazy to do 200+ posts lol plus the fact that im lucky if i can manage to walk anywhere in SL without fucking up the camera or walking into a wall, i wouldnt have a clue what to share, but cheers to all the otherside of the coin who do put that time and effort in to share tips/secrets/abilities... ive scored some brownie points with the missus for a few things i found on posts here that she couldnt work out, so thanks heaps for helping me get(and keep) my dick wet Big Grin

Cheers

How does one pay 20$ to skip past the so-called "leacher" level? I would do that. It's both loose change and a way to say "thank you" that is probably more meaningful than a simple post.

I'm sure this is something I'm missing but using the wrong search term. I even went through the thread with find "dae"

Is there no way with Revelator to export mesh (that's worn) as a dae file?

You can export anything (any object i mean, even an avatar) as a DAE. Not everything is useful to do so, but what I do use that for myself is unrigged worn meshes, usually hats and hair for me, occasionally footwear, but I'm sure there's more. I don't usually bother with it much but the DAE exporter also has the texture save code in its own thread which gets better results for saving textures sometimes than the XML exporter, as I haven't got that threaded yet.

On what menu? Post a screenshot of how you are trying to save whatever it is. The path to exporting anything is rightclick > export > XML or OBJ or DAE. If DAE isn't enabling for you something is wrong.

OFF TOPIC - How will it be with the new BAKE ON MESH textures SL system? Will it be possible to use the current viewers to copy these textures?
